Fire on Long Mountain Road

February 2011

Text Box: Call Summary:
Wild Land Fire - Washington

From the top down:

View from Long Mountain Road (along Long Mountain) where fire stopped thanks to the efforts of firefighters from Company 1 and Virginia Department of Forestry.  Note the 12 foot wall of flame across the field heading West.  There was also a wall moving south towards Tiger Valley Road which “jumped” the road.

Fire stopped at Long Mountain - note the intensity and flame height on the tree trunks.

Volunteer David Dike doing mop up the day after the fire.  Company 1 members were on site off and on all day with Virginia Department of Forestry to control flares and rekindles. Those are very common for several days (up to a month) after a wild fire—especially in dry & windy conditions

Looking across the field towards Long Mountain Road & Long Mountain. Note the hill (Long Mountain) behind which leads to acres and acres of woodland.  We were able to stop the spread of the fire by putting out spot fires before they could ignite the woods.
All Rappahannock County Volunteer Fire Companies were engaged in battling this fire along with Virginia Department of Forestry. It consumed 60 to 70 acres.
