Fire at the Refuse Center

January 2008

A fire in the dumpster at the Flatwood Refuse and Recycling Center was probably started by someone throwing ashes from a wood-burning stove into the dumpster, even though signs at the site say not to do that.

Solution: The Fire companies quickly knocked down the flames - taking advantage of the Compressed Air Foam system, but the garbage under the surface continued to smolder. Then, excavating equipment (from the trash removal contractor) mixes up the trash to allow firefighters to spray the lower layers with foam.
